About This Lesson

What is the meaning of The Giving Tree?

This Giving Tree lesson plan uses Shel Silverstein's beloved classic to explore caring for the environment and each other — teaching students that we should take what we need from nature, but always give back with gratitude and care. Students will connect the tree's unconditional giving to our relationship with the planet, discovering how mutual respect between people and nature leads to a healthier world for everyone.

Designed for PreK–2 as a single, self-contained lesson (45–60 minutes), this plan includes a read-aloud guide, grade-differentiated discussion questions, a hands-on recycled-materials art activity, writing prompts, and an optional extension activity for Grades 3–5. Educators, parents, and guardians can all use this resource with minimal prep.
