About This Collection

Summer Reading Resources for PreK–12

This collection includes free summer reading lessons, activities, and grade-specific reading lists for students in PreK through 12th grade. Resources are curated by educators on Share My Lesson to help students stay engaged with reading all summer long and build literacy skills before the new school year begins.

Why Summer Reading Matters

Research shows students can lose months of reading progress when they stop reading over the summer. Regular summer reading helps students retain vocabulary, strengthen comprehension, and return to school confident and ready to learn. It also helps students preparing for a new grade level by introducing subjects and skills they will encounter in the fall.

What Educators Will Find in This Collection

This summer reading collection includes:

  • Lesson plans and discussion guides for popular summer books (PreK–12)
  • Grade-specific summer reading lists from Preschool through 12th grade
  • Interactive activities and reading journals for independent learners
  • Resources for diverse and inclusive summer reading, including multicultural titles
  • Tips and articles to help parents support summer reading at home

Sections are organized by grade band so educators and parents can quickly find age-appropriate materials for Elementary School, Middle School, and High School students.

Summer Reading for Families

Parents can use these resources alongside their children. Discussing books, sharing opinions, and exploring themes together strengthens family bonds and supports academic growth. This collection includes parent-facing tip sheets and read-aloud resources for younger students.
