About This Lesson

Introduce students to the groundbreaking life of Bessie Coleman, the first Black and Native American woman to earn a pilot’s license. In this lesson, students will explore how Coleman overcame barriers in the United States by traveling abroad to pursue her dream of flight, and how she used her platform to advocate for racial equality and opportunity in aviation.

Through video and reflection activities, students will examine themes of perseverance, identity, and representation, and consider the lasting impact of Coleman’s legacy on both aviation and civil rights.
