Hey everybody!
We uploaded a video from SML member Melissa Cairns sharing about her thoughts on what the Freedom to Teach means to her. We love seeing all these great responses from SML members. And remember, everyone has until Sept 30 to share what the Freedom to Teach means to them, for a chance to win a Fitbit versa! Take a look and let us know what you think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MBXnEcTMfY&t=31s

Love this! Thanks for sharing your quote and your video, Melissa!
The freedom to teach means that I can use my content knowledge and my knowledge of my students to individualize and differentiate my instruction to help my students understand the material.
It means that I have I have some control over how something has to be taught in my classroom.

Freedom to teach means having the autonomy to focus less on preparing students to fill in the bubble of a multiple choice test and more on developing social emotional learning skills, creativity, and problem solving.
Freedom to teach means not being bound by the tight grip of standards that discourage students from focusing on issues that matter the most to them. When teachers are free, students are free to be the true architects of their future.

Freedom to Teach means to me that my students have safe learning environments.
It also means that our school district is able to provide the needed resources for current technology and educational materials that promote lifelong learning and critical thinking skills in my students. And finally, Freedom to Teach means that I am able to give my students the freedom to investigate ideas and concepts that spring from discussions and explorations.

Freedom to teach is having the ability to explore the areas that make me and my students feel truly passionate about learning.
This exploration captivates kids to be the best version of themselves and come to school with a positive attitude. Freedom to teach creates not just a classroom, but a whole building, where every person regardless of position feels listened to and respected. This means that requests for resources, training and collaboration are heard and met to the best quality that all involved can provide.

I like your point on how it creates an environment in the whole building where everyone "feels listened to and respected." Thanks for sharing!

Freedom to teach in schools starts with educators being open to different lenses when sharing information, being vulnerable when striving for equity within their classroom and school sites, and also willing to listen to students wants and needs to create.

Freedom to Teach means that teachers have the unique ability to discern what each of their students need and provide the individualized instruction that each one needs.
